Of course it is, as we discussed the other day...people rarely want 'just the facts' any more, but analysis as well. You can find that in a newspaper, of course, but is usually buried under everything else. Apart from that, Google has been ripping off publishers for years...I can't get excited by it. I often look at the list of links which AI has checked before giving me the answer. it depends on how curious I am (ie 'committed' as a reader, if u like) or whether it is merely a casual inquiry. If it's a casual inquiry, I want a quick answer and I am gone anyway.
However, it a huge leap even for a committed reader to go from visiting an actual site provided by AI to subscribing, especially if I have come for just one story. That's where publishers have to be clever about how to engage the reader. That has little to do with Ai and comes down to the publisher's smarts. I think they are too quick to blame Ai for their own lack of engagement and marketing skills.
